COMINS ELECTRIC Bill Comins' Website The guitar that Vic Juris is currently using is called the Port Master - named for it's sound port in the bass side rim of the upper bout. It is a model I've been developing over the past several years and this one is the second prototype. Intended to be a modern electric jazz guitar, this version has a laminated spruce top that posses some lively acoustic properties which are tamed by forgoing the f hole cutouts and by the utilization of a meatier maple bracing pattern. It has two built in Fralin humbuckers. The Port Master can produce much of the subtlety and richness one would look for in an acoustic archtop while being amenable to higher volume settings. The electric sound is evenly responsive, controllable, and versatile. Even when used in combination with overdrive effects, the issue of feedback is quite manageable, coming in somewhere between a Gibson ES175 and an ES335. The body design includes a slanted upper bout and heel, providing for better access to the upper register. Also, it is relatively light weight, making it very easy on the shoulder. - Bill Comins |

DOYLE CUSTOM ELECTRIC Tom Doyle's website One of 26 that I produced back in the mid 70's - early 80's. The sides of the guitar were cut out of a solid ingot of mahogany; the top is a two-piece book matched flamed maple, carved on both sides with small bound F holes. The backs were sometimes carved, but Vic's model has a flat solid piece of mahogany ¼" thick. The body shape is somewhat like a Les Paul but thicker and slightly bigger in size. Also there is an asymmetrical cutaway to give better access to the upper register of fingerboard. Fingerboard scale length is 24-¾. The electronics are my custom Low Impedance humbuckers with a Master Volume and Tone with Ohm s/w, single coil s/w, and rotary s/w for different rhythm and lead sounds. Looking for a much more controlled jazz non-feedback sound, this model came to fruition. It was first introduced at the 1979 and 1980 NAMMN shows creating quite a seen. It was a little ahead of its time. I couldn't be more proud than to have a world-class jazz player like Vic still using it. - Tom Doyle |
